Jacob Gardner Joins AI-MI as Senior Personnel

Posted: July 27, 2026

AI-MI welcomes Jacob Gardner of the University of Pennsylvania, who joins the Institute as Senior Personnel. Gardner is an expert in probabilistic machine learning and Bayesian optimization, applying generative modeling to scientific discovery — methods that sit at the center of AI-MI’s work on guiding experiments and simulations toward promising new materials rather than searching candidate spaces blindly.

His work on decision-making under uncertainty complements the institute’s autonomous-experimentation and self-driving-lab efforts, where the question is not only what to predict but what to measure next. Gardner now appears in the Faculty Members section of the AI-MI people page.
