Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Join a cross-disciplinary summer program uniting AI, data science, and materials research through mentored projects, seminars, and real-world discovery.
Participants gain hands-on experience with AI tools shaping the future of materials science.
The AI-MI Summer Undergraduate Research Program is building upon a new collaboration between the CHESS program and the Cornell Bowers BURE program.
CHESS is a leading materials science community on Cornell’s campus, and BURE is a summer program at Bowers CIS for undergraduate students to engage in computer science, information science, statistics, or data science research projects.
In the AI-MI SURP, students will work alongside scientists at CHESS and BURE programs, using experiments, simulations, and data to help speed up materials discovery with AI. Students may contribute to real research projects and open research platforms—from quantum and soft materials to self-driving labs—and gain hands-on experience with tools shaping the future of materials science.
AI-MI SURP will last for 10 weeks, June 1st – August 7th 2026.
AI-MI SURP Materials Track
This track is run jointly by Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences and Education (CLASSE), which encompasses accelerator-physics research and X-ray science, and AI-MI, which uses AI to accelerate materials research.
Science and engineering students from around the country will be invited to participate in research at CHESS. This program is intended primarily for sophomore and junior students in science and engineering.
In addition to participation in research, the program will include informal seminars, formal lectures, tours of research facilities, social and recreational events, and a forum at summer’s end in which participants will present the results of their research.

AI-MI SURP AI Track
Open to all Cornell undergraduates under AI-MI SURP AI Track, this program pairs students with a faculty mentor to work on a real research project. Students will gain valuable skills, build connections, and learn how to conduct an independent research project.
Participants work one-on-one with a faculty mentor to develop research and technical skills while exploring whether a Ph.D. or research-focused career is the right path for them. Over the summer, they join a community of curious, motivated peers, attend a series of enrichment talks on technical and career topics, and culminate the experience by presenting their project at an end-of-summer Research Symposium.
To learn more about the AI-MI SURP AI Track please refer to Cornell Bowers BURE. If you have any questions, please reach out to aimi_admin@cornell.edu.
